Jess & Chad’s Autumn Wedding at Hodsock Priory: Embracing the Elements

Documentary Wedding Photography at Hodsock Priory

When Jess and Chad first got in touch, they mentioned something I hear from almost every couple: they were quite nervous about being in the spotlight and far from comfortable in front of a camera. My goal for their autumn wedding at Hodsock Priory was simple—to make sure they actually enjoyed their day without feeling like they were on a photoshoot.

We caught up for a relaxed pre-wedding shoot beforehand, which went a long way in helping them feel at ease. By the time their wedding day arrived, the nerves were gone, and we were able to focus purely on the natural, authentic moments that make a wedding so special.

Blending In: A Natural Approach to the Morning

A big part of the documentary approach is blending in. Jess and Chad wanted the photography to feel like a natural extension of the day, with no forced smiles or awkward staging.

During the morning preparations in the Priory suites, I made sure to keep things laid-back. I love it when couples—and their guests—eventually stop noticing the camera. It allows me to capture the real atmosphere of the morning, exactly as it happened.

The Ceremony and the British Weather

Jess and Chad experienced the absolute full display of British weather on their wedding day. We had rain, we had shine, and we even had gale-force winds!

Fortunately, Hodsock Priory is a venue that handles wild weather brilliantly. The historic interiors, including the beautiful Buchanan Hall where they exchanged their vows, meant that the celebrations inside felt incredibly warm, elegant, and completely untouched by the elements outside.

Autumn Portraits: Braving the Elements

When it came time for portraits, Jess and Chad fully embraced the weather. They didn't let the wind or rain stop them; they just rolled with it!

We took a quick, unposed walk outside—just long enough to capture the atmosphere without keeping them away from their guests. Some of my absolute favourite photos from the day are the ones captured in the wind and rain! It’s a testament to the fact that you don't need perfect sunshine for beautiful wedding photos—you just need a couple willing to laugh and be themselves. Hodsock Priory and the dramatic autumn weather provided all the magic we needed!

A Relaxed Reception and Pavilion Party

Because we kept the portraits brief and natural, Jess and Chad were able to spend their drinks reception exactly where they wanted to be: with their family and friends. I spent this time working the room, capturing the candid joy and the great atmosphere inside the Priory.

As the evening rolled in, the celebrations moved over to the Pavilion. The energy was fantastic, and capturing the dance floor in full swing was the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable day. I am so grateful to Jess and Chad for trusting me to capture their story, come rain or shine.
