YORKSHIRE ENGAGEMENT &

PRE-WEDDING PHOTOSHOOTS

An engagement or pre-wedding photoshoot session is essentially a trial run with me — minus the pressure, the timeline, and Uncle Bob asking when you're having kids! It's a casual photoshoot that happens a month or more before your wedding day. It lets the two of you and me get to know each other, have a laugh, and importantly, capture some cracking shots of you both!

Think of it as the photographic equivalent of a test drive. Some clients wonder if they really need a pre-wedding photoshoot, but the benefits of them extend far beyond just having amazing photos to share on social media.

What is the Difference Between

Pre-Wedding Photos and Engagement Photos?

I get asked (quite a lot!) "What's the difference between pre-wedding photos and engagement photos?" The answer is: there isn't one! They both mean the same thing, and the confusion is completely understandable.

I find that the photoshoots massively boost your confidence and, importantly, help you overcome any anxieties either of you has about being photographed. As a result, you can then relax more on your wedding day.

Why a Yorkshire Pre-Wedding Photoshoot is Worth the Investment

Is an engagement shoot a good investment? The short answer? Absolutely! Couples who skip the engagement session often tell me they wish they hadn't—especially those who felt nervous about being photographed.

The confidence you gain from a pre-wedding shoot 100% translates directly to more natural and relaxed wedding photos.

Engagement Photography Sessions: How to Rid Yourself of Photo Anxieties!

I've photographed hundreds of Yorkshire engagement and pre-wedding photoshoots (along with Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Italy!) and have so much experience to share with you! If the thought of being photographed on your wedding day makes you break into a cold sweat, you're not alone. From my experience, over half of couples dread being photographed.

That's exactly why an engagement photography session (or pre-wedding photoshoot, as some call them) isn't just another thing to tick off your wedding prep list—it's vital to ease any photo anxieties that you might have, and will make you both look like naturals when it actually counts.

What To Expect for Your Engagement Photoshoot

A Relaxed Experience

Most engagement sessions last about an hour and will feel more like a walk and talk, rather than me being 3 foot away from you with a lens continuously pointing at your face! I hunt for the best light, place the two of you in it, and capture naturally what I see!

Gentle Direction, Not Awkward Posing

Rather than put you through an insufferable posing class, I will just give you (only if you need them!) little tips like hand placements and activities that generate genuine reactions. I promise it'll be relaxed, a real good laugh and without a single "say cheese."

"But We Hate Having Our Photo Taken!"

  • "We’re going to look so awkward!" Let’s be honest: the first five minutes in front of a professional camera will always feel a bit strange. But I promise you’ll settle into it much faster than you think! By the end of the session, most couples are genuinely amazed not just by how natural they look in the photos, but by how relaxed they actually felt taking them.

"Is it really worth the extra expense?" Think of a pre-wedding shoot as the ultimate peace of mind for your wedding photography. If it's not already included in your wedding photography package, the cost is a tiny fraction of your overall budget. The payoff is huge: it dramatically improves the quality of your wedding day gallery because you'll already feel completely confident in front of my lens.

  • "We simply don’t have the time!" An engagement session usually only takes about an hour. Compared to the countless hours you’ll spend organising seating charts and picking out flowers, it’s a tiny time commitment with a massive return. Plus, it's a brilliant excuse to get dressed up, have a laugh, and go out for a nice meal together straight after! The results of your engagement photo shoot on your wedding day will be amazing!

My Favourite Yorkshire Pre-Wedding

Photoshoot Locations (And Just Beyond!)

Choosing the right backdrop can make a massive difference in how relaxed you feel. Fortunately, we are spoilt for choice around here! Whether you want dramatic scenery or stunning architecture, here are a few of my absolute favourite spots for engagement photography:

  • Roundhay Park (Leeds): With over 700 acres of rolling parkland, woodland, and lakes, this is perfect if you want a relaxed, "walk-and-talk" vibe. There is so much variety here that it's easy to find a quiet, secluded spot where you can just be yourselves without an audience.

  • The Shambles (York): If you prefer historic charm, it doesn't get more iconic than the cobbled streets of York. The overhanging timber-framed buildings create gorgeous, moody lighting. Top tip: We’ll want to do this one nice and early to beat the crowds and get those magical, empty-street shots!

  • The Victoria Arcades (Leeds): A brilliant option if you want something a bit more elegant and sophisticated—or if the unpredictable Yorkshire weather decides to rain on us! The Victorian architecture, glass roofs, and ornate details make for a stunning, high-fashion feel.

  • Haworth & The Moors: Channel your inner Wuthering Heights! If you want dramatic, romantic, and beautifully windswept pre-wedding photos, the sweeping moorlands around Haworth are absolutely unbeatable.

  • Clumber Park (Nottinghamshire): Okay, so it’s just over the border into Notts, but it’s too good not to mention! The majestic avenues of trees, the beautiful lake, and the endless woodlands offer incredible natural light and a beautiful, peaceful setting to calm any photo nerves.
